STEP ONE: First one must identify the space they want litter-free. Then, it’s a matter of going to work. You could document the “before” by taking either a video or a few camera shots of the space you’re going to trashform. Then you’ll have that baseline, something you can go back to and say, “Hey, this is the way that space used to look before I decided to create a more cared for space.”
STEP TWO: Once the space is identified, it’s then just a matter of putting in the time to actually collect all that doesn’t belong then properly dispose of those items.
STEP TWO, POINT ONE: If you want to help build community, you can provide a sense of responsibility for either a family member of someone in your circle of influence to also be responsible for that space with you and have them de-litter along side you. It’s the experience of sharing that is so powerful.
STEP TWO, POINT TWO: If you still want the space debris-free and don’t have someone close to you who would benefit by feeling “valued,” you have the option of hiring someone to do the job. Moving the money around and gainfully employing someone for this job is a good thing.
STEP TWO, POINT THREE: Remember, it’s your project to oversee. Make sure whoever it is that will be out doing the fieldwork (either with or without you) has really good eyesight (corrective lenses are totally okay) and is physically able to identify, collect and dispose of the found objects.

After I removed all the cigarette butts beside this park bench, I decided to fill the space with a beautiful design from the naturally littered leaves from the nearby tree.
STEP THREE: Take time to celebrate your small successes toward creating and maintaining a litter free space. Whether it’s you or someone else who will be creating this space, you’ll want to be sure to understand that this is to become a habit, a way of living, bringing rich rewards. Feel free to share your process with me or others.
